MONEY DOESN'T TALK, IT SWEARS
By way of introduction to the political content on this blog, I'm a longtime Democrat, have worked for the party in the past and continue to support candidates though I now work in education. Most people who've heard me rant at all the past four years probably know that I'm supporting John Kerry for president this year. (And really, after observing what Bush is capable of doing, who -- other than standup comedians desperate for material -- wouldn't support Kerry?) But that's not the only important race this fall; Republicans hold majorities in the House and Senate, and those races get less attention even though they determine whether men like Tom DeLay get to shape legislation.
Democrats can win Congressional elections this year; they've already won two in Kentucky and South Dakota. But they need money to win. ActBlue, an online political action committee, allows for easy, secure donations to targeted Congressional campaigns. If enough Democratic candidates are adequately funded, they can increase get-out-the-vote efforts and successfully run response ads to the smear campaigns Republicans used so effectively in 2002.
See my two lists of recommended races -- one for the Senate, one for the House.
If you're so inclined, read my recommendations and contribute what you will. I've done a bit of research over the past few months and I think all of these candidates have a chance, should they have the resources. Some of these candidates oppose the most virulent right-wingers in Congress like gaybasher Marilyn Musgrave and xenophobe Tom Tancredo. Every dollar counts, especially for the House races! If you have other candidates in mind who you think would benefit, ActBlue allows you to create your own list of recommendations. And if you like either my lists or the system, feel free to pass this information along to people who you think might be interested.
